Southend's first ever win at Valley Parade was achieved in front of a crowd of less than 10000 in this vast arena and in unrelenting rain despite the early season scheduling.  The modest away following was housed in the upper tier behind the goal nearest the city centre, giving an excellent view despite the somewhat ramshackle surroundings.
