Game watched: Southend United 2-1 MK Dons

First game of a four-day-four-game-tour in November 2009. I had arrived at Heathrow from Amsterdam and headed directly out to Southend to locate my B&B, which was close to the pier. I remember walking down to the pier on a slightly rainy evening and then having a fish'n'chips in a pub before the game. In the ticket line, I was approached by a gentleman who had a ticket for his son that he wanted to sell me after he had upgraded it to an adult ticket. It was no problem for me, so I gave him £22 for the ticket as it was in a good position and I got a seat neighbour to talk to.

Sam Baldock gave the visitors the lead and Aaron Wilbraham's own goal brought Southend on level terms early on in the first half. I would watch Wilbraham score a goal for Bristol City in the right net some six years later. A late penalty in the 94th minute was converted by Lee Barnard and Southend took all 3 points upsetting the league table positions, 4th and 13th, respectively. Both teams form faded during the second half of the season with MK Dons finishing 12th and the Seasiders relegated in 23rd.

The next morning it was off to Nottingham for the next game.
