BurnSand visited City Ground on 11/02/2015

Game watched: Nottingham Forest 3-0 Wigan Athletic

This was the fifth game in 5 days on my February 2015 tour. I had made the journey down to Nottingham from Morecambe and had started early in the morning. I stayed at the St James Hotel, which the was newly renovated. They even offered a free drink in the bar, which I didn't say no to.

I walked out to City Ground arriving there around 7 and located the ticket office to get me a ticket. The booths were occupied so I was approached by an older gentleman who asked me if I was going to buy a ticket. When I said yes, he offered me one since he had two season tickets and his regular companion was on travel. The problem was the payment since I didn't have that much money in cash. I told him I also needed a match program, but that he could have what I had left, which then was probably less than £15. He had asked me for £20 initially. This is how I got a guide and a great seat to the evening's game.

Dougie Freedman had been appointed Forest manager ten days before and this was his first home game. The visitors from Wigan, who had been relegated from the Premier League two seasons earlier, was one the most lethargic teams I've ever seen in England and Forest should have scored more than the three from Britt Assambalonga, Chris Burke and Henri Lansbury. The last goal was set up by Michail Antonio, who six months later would be transferred to West Ham. Assambalonga had a nasty knee injury in the second half, which would keep him out of the game for 14 months. As I remember it, it looked quite innocuous when he went down in the offensive penalty box. Noone watching from the stands could have believed that he would be out for more than a year.

Forest finished the season mid-table and Wigan were relegated to L1. The morning after I located Brown Bettys in St James Street, as I didn't have breakfast included at the hotel. It was definitely something I didn't regret. I'm sorry to learn that they have closed. A couple of hours later, I left for Liverpool to spend two days there without football!
