Game watched: Scunthorpe United 2-1 Bury

This was the fourth game on my April 2016 tour. I had come up from London during the day arriving around noon in Scunthorpe where I stayed at the Wortley House Hotel, which was a good deal. I found a Wetherspoons in the town centre where I could get a late lunch and then located the old ground in Scunthorpe, which now is a Sainsburys.

When it was time for the game, I took a local bus out to the area of Glanford Park and picked up my picket to the Clugston Stand. Glanford Park was to be my 63rd league ground.

Graham Alexander had been appointed new Scunthorpe manager less than a month before, on March 22. Under their new manager, SUFC won the last six league games, this was number 3 in that series, only to miss out on the playoffs on goal difference.

Luke Williams opened the scoring for The Iron in the 19th minute. In the second half, Kyle Wootton had the easiest of tap-ins for 2-0. From a corner, Bury's Tom Pope headed in 2-1 with half an hour to play. It was to be the final result. In the 89th minute, Bury's Kelvin Etuhu managed to receive two yellow cards (and a red) within a minute from two different situations.

I have never seen an older football crowd around me than that night. There were sticks almost everywhere. After the game, I walked back to the hotel which took me a good 45 minutes. When I left the hotel to take the train to Manchester the next day, there were two other guys who also were heading for the train station. It turned out that they were from New Zealand and also had been to the game the night before.
