Game watched: Burnley 2-0 Watford

My son and I had been to Islay for a three-day whisky excursion, so I arrived at noon from Edinburgh with a change of trains in Preston. This would be the first game of a six-games-in-six days tour. I had already been to Turf Moor in January 2003 for an FA cup replay between Burnley and Grimsby so I count Turf Moor as my league ground #11. It's hard to beat Turf Moor for character since football has been played there since 1883.

Burnley had bounced back to the Premier League after one season in the Championship when they were promoted as champions. They had gathered four points from the five first games, taking 3 points at home to Liverpool. Watford had managed 7 points from their first five.

I was in the James Hargreaves Stand which is opposite the main stand, the Bob Lord Stand, which was where I had sat in 2003. Unlike the legendary Bob Lord, Hargreaves was never associated with football. He was the inventor of 'spinning Jenny' in the 18th century. What I immediately noticed once the game got underway was that almost everybody was standing in the Hargreaves Stand so there was no choice if you wanted to follow the game. Watford wore an all-white strip this evening and their play was as pale as their strips. Steven Defour had been an unlikely Burnley signing that had arrived the previous month. He assisted to both goals, the first was a corner headed in by Jeff Hendrick 7 minutes before the break and the second was a cross that Michael Keane headed in 5 minutes into the second half.

The next morning I left for a trip up north to add Victoria Park in Hartlepool to my list of league grounds.
