Game watched: Coventry City 3-0 Notts County

Oh, Coventry City, this mishandled club. I had been to Northampton to watch them play at home two and a half years earlier. Now they were playing at the right stadium, but not forever as it turned out. This was their first ever L2 game and the first at this level since 1959.

I saw the game with my daughter. It was her 20th league ground and for me #72. We arrived at Coventry after 11 and walked over to our hotel. Since we were early, we could only leave our luggage, and then walked back to the station where we grabbed a taxi up to the stadium as no trains would be running to the stadium's own train station for several hours. We asked the taxi driver for a place to eat and he let us off near a Frankie & Benny's from where we could see the stadium. While we were having lunch, there was a torrential rain so there was no use getting out until around 2.30 when it had stopped.

When we had taken our sets in the East Stand we were told on the PA that the game would be delayed to allow the pitch to dry up. When the game got underway around 3.15, Coventry winger Jodi Jones probably had the game of his life and scored a hat trick. During the remainder of the league season, he would only score two more goals taking his tally for the season to 5.

Notts County were better than the result suggested and when the season ended these two teams had to play each other in the playoff semifinal games. Coventry won it by the aggregate score 5-2 and went on to beat Exeter City at Wembley to regain their L1 status.

After the game, we found a bus that went down the city centre from where we walked back to the hotel to check in.
