OldPaShrimper visited Wembley Stadium on 07/04/2013

Game watched: Crewe Alexandra 2-0 Southend United

Being lucky enough to live under half an hour away (on the excellent Chiltern service to Wembley Stadium station), I've been a regular at the new Wembley since 2007, but it's this 2013 visit which was the first which really mattered, being also Southend's first appearance (excluding, of course, Southend's league fixture against Clapton Orient in 1930 who were temporarily playing home fixtures at the old Wembley...)

Even before the day, things were not going well.  Having sacked the manager, Paul Sturrock, chairman Ron Martin suggested it would be a good idea for him to manage his former charges for one last time.  Luggy politely declined, opting instead to share a drink with the fans and sit with them as guest of honour.  Incoming manager, Phil Brown, suitably undermined, was left to select from Sturrock's squad, understandably chose experience over youth in goal, thereby benching future star Daniel Bentley, and handing a start to Bilel Mohsni, who saved one of his last, and worst, performances for the occasion.

Crewe dominated the game, scoring early in each half, leaving Southend chasing shadows.  It would be another two years before Southend, and Bentley, achieved Wembley redemption via the League Two playoffs.  But that's another story...

Wembley is a great stadium despite being overpriced and windy and exposed outside.  Retail infrastructure around the ground continues to improve and transport links are excellent.  I'll be back...
